Complaint ID: 3174230

Product: Credit card or prepaid card

Sub-Product: Store credit card

Issue: Fees or interest

Subissue: Problem with fees

Company: CITIBANK, N.A.

Complaint: I have requested now 3 times with Citibank to change my billing due date to the beginning of the month. I was told it takes 2 to 3 billing cycles to take effect. I made my payments well before the cited due date on each bill around the 5th of every month. After a few months and no due date change I contacted Citibank a second time and was told there was no note on my account that I had requested it. So they again told me the same thing that it would take 2 to 3 billing cycles to take effect and cancelled only one of the late fees they charged me, this was in XX/XX/XXXX. I called again today XX/XX/XXXX. Again was told the same thing there was no notation on my account for such a request and I had been charged a late fee ranging from {$27.00} to {$38.00} every month since XXXX ( that was as far back as they could see due to archiving ). When I spoke to a manager ( XXXX ) she was said there was not a note at first, then somehow found a note on my account from my call in XXXX. She stated the note indicated that I requested a due date change but they were unable to do it due to terms being changed at that time. I was NOT told this by the person I spoke to in XXXX. I have been charged a late fee every month for the last year because they failed to comply with my request to change my due date and failed to notify me that they were unable to do it. I have made a payment every month some doubled up because of the bills I received with different amounts due. I was again told that she could not change the due date for my account. I find this incredibly hard to believe that in this day of technology they can't change a simple due date for an account. She also stated she was not authorized to waive more than one late fee per year. This seems like a simple request that has been ignored now three times, and a failure to properly note my account when I call their customer service center. In the interest of complete transparency there are XXXXwo instances where I made two payments in one month ( on separate dates ) to try and follow their sloppy billing notices so I understand the late fees there although it still was NOT my fault they failed to change the due date/billing cycle. I was told I can call back in XXXX to request it again. It's simply ridiculous.

Product: Money transfer, virtual currency, or money service

Sub-Product: Domestic (US) money transfer

Issue: Fraud or scam

Subissue:

Company: CITIBANK, N.A.

Complaint: In XX/XX/XXXX, I noticed that there were 4 unauthorized ACH withdrawals from my money market savings account at Citibank, totaling {$19000.00}. The withdrawals occurred between XXXX. I notified the bank of these unauthorized transactions as soon as I noticed them and they provisionally credited the account on XX/XX/XXXX. However, on XX/XX/XXXX they deducted the provisional credit from my account because they " received confirmation from the originating banks that the transactions were appropriately applied to your account. '' They provided me with records of authorization from XXXX XXXX, where I found out an account was opened using my information and the money was transferred into the account at XXXX XXXX. Customer services representatives at Citibank advised me to contact XXXX XXXX and obtain documentation that the account was fraudulent. This was difficult, considering there were no branches of the bank near where I reside and XXXX XXXX would not allow me to close the account by phone, because they had to verify my identity in person. On XX/XX/XXXX I opened up a second case to return my money, and on XXXX they responded : Based on the information you provided and our second review of your claim, we maintain our position to deny your claim and consider this matter closed. On XX/XX/XXXX I filed a police report at XXXX XXXX in XXXX of grand larceny. The investigator assigned to my case informed me that this would be a low priority case and I have not heard from him with any updates. On XX/XX/XXXX I opened up a new dispute with Citibank. On XX/XX/XXXX, this claim was denied, as they stated " Due to the limited time-frame that banks are allowed to return these types of transactions, we are unable to return these items. However, we previously contacted the originator of these transactions to try to recover these funds. The documentation returned to us from the originating bank confirmed your authorization. '' In the middle of XXXX, I finally made the trip to a XXXX XXXX branch and began the process of closing the account. I followed up several times with XXXX XXXX Office of the Chairman and Identity Theft departments, who told me that they were backlogged and it would take a while for my case to be reviewed. On XX/XX/XXXX XXXX XXXX sent me a letter confirming that the account was unauthorized and closed the account. They sent the letter to the wrong address, but I finally received it at the end of XXXX. On XX/XX/XXXX, I opened up a new case in order to provide the documentation I received from XXXX XXXX. Citibank told me to fax the document, and I did but they told me they didnt receive it. Then they told me to email the document to DC.disputes, and again when I called to confirm they said they didnt receive it, and the customer service agent suggested it was because I didnt include my account #. So I resent the email with account number and I requested for them to put a note on the dispute to wait to review the case until I sent in the documents. On XX/XX/XXXX, I went to a Citibank branch and had them fax all of my documents and proof to the attention of billing disputes, as was instructed to me. However on XX/XX/XXXX, I received communication from Citibank that my case was resolved, with no other information. When I called Citibank, they informed me that he case was closed not in your favor, and they had not received any of the documents I sent. She said there was no information about why my claim was denied and told me that I should contact XXXX XXXX, as the case was closed and there was nothing she could do for me. On XX/XX/XXXX, I spoke to XXXX at XXXX XXXX, who is the manager of the identity theft unit at XXXX XXXX. She was the first helpful person in the long process and explained that Citibank seems to wrongly have classified my claims as ACH disputes, when in reality they are online billing disputes. She said that they have had many similar fraud cases with Citibank and that Citibank needs to file an R10 - through Fiserve- so that it will appear on the suspension and return code. She stated this may also be called an EWF or compass return form. If they do this she explained that XXXX XXXX will return the money. I am extremely frustrated that Citibank has given me so much misleading and confusing information and was classifying my claim incorrectly the whole time. They clearly did not understand the nature of the fraud and have been completely unhelpful. I need to speak to someone at Citibank who is knowledgeable about my particular situation who can escalate it appropriately. This is a lot of money and I need it back as soon as possible.

I opened an Accelerated Savings Account with a transfer of $100,000.00 from my primary financial institution. I wired an additional $15,000.00 in March 2022. In November 2022, I attempt to transfer an additional $85,000.00 to Citibank from my primary financial institution. The wire transfer was denied due to Citibank's input of the wrong account number. I tried to link several external financial institutions to perform the transfer. My Citibank Account will not permit me to link any outside institutions with my account. I am unable to wire money to, or from this account. I contacted customer support who was unable to correct the problem. Their solution was to send me a check that would take fifteen business days or three calendar weeks. I will lose days of interest due to the inability of Citibank to address their software problems which are due to a platform change in 2022.

The Citibank Mastercard Customer Service Disputes Department refuses to accept my evidence for reversing charges to provide a refund that is contractually due to me as a result of a written cancellation notice I provided to a merchant, Progressive Van Lines, of Boynton Beach, Florida. THE MERCHANT PROVIDED NO SERVICES TO ME WHATSOEVER, HAVING GENERATED ONLY A CONTRACT FORM. In addition to the proof I provided, I claim that failure of the merchant to further contact the bank and failure of the bank to further contact the merchant over this customer dispute is grounds for an automatic reversal of the charges as a credit to my Mastercard account. The merchant has clearly dishonored and violated the contract reviewed by Citibank. I now hold Citibank ultimately responsible for enabling my substantial monetary (not to mention time spent) loss. Furthermore, Mastercard guidelines apparently provide an open door through which dishonest merchants, simply by not responding, or by using automated cancellation responses only, can openly violate contracts and steal customers’ money through credit card transactions without fear of loss to the Citibank Mastercard’s dispute process.

I find that the service is not at all helpful even on the Chat. No matter what I attempted to do to circumvent the account being levied an exorbitant overdraft fee. I thought this issue was resolved, well at least I was lied to and told it was resolved and the next thing I see is these fees and in one day, the cost doubled. There is no way I will ever be able to pay this so when I requested this account be closed, I find that Citibank would rather take every dime I will get from my fixed income. By the time social security deposits my next disability stipend I will be left with $0.00 to pay stupid things like rent.

On 12/2/2020, I opened up a checking account in the amount of $6000 and a savings account in the amount of $9000 after responding to a promotion from Citibank of a $400 bonus to open the accounts. On 12/19/2020, I was horrified to discover both of my accounts were at a $0 balance as of 12/10/2020. I called Citibank numerous times, whereupon I was either given the runaround, provided no information, or hung up on. On 12/4/2021, I was finally told by Roland, a fraud specialist, that an individual posing as me walked into a Citibank branch in another state (I live in Texas, where there are no branch locations), and claimed identify theft. Citibank claims they verified the identify of this person, although no one called, texted or emailed me to question my whereabouts, and gave this person my $15,000. You would assume the first red flag was that this person did not live in Texas, where I reside!! It is my firm belief that this fraud was orchestrated and carried out by a Citibank employee along with one or more accomplices.

on June 26, 2020, I was trying to get a loan from Cash Advance America. They deposited $757.00 into my account and I was supposed to let it deposit and send it back to them to verify that it was truly me. Well, then I couldn’t get into my account and I contacted customer service. I was informed that my account was in closure mode and there is nothing I can do about the money that was already in the account that was mine and long I have to wait until my check comes in the mail. I think it’s completely wrong and I am being punished for a scam that I had no idea about.

These checks were 100% legit. One rep that I spoke to said “Ma’am, we have cashed many checks from this bank (Bank of America) and they have never looked like these. That is a LIE. The company my husband works for has 7,000 employees and none of them have ever had an issue. Now they are holding THOUSANDS of dollars from me and my family for no reason. This is unethical. Transferred a significant amount of money to the account and have not been able to access my money for the past two months. Each time I have called their customer service I confirm they have all the necessary documents and they tell me they will escalate the situation and I will hear back in 48 hours. Never have they contacted me. Every time I contact them I get the same run around and no one can give me access to my money. What a nightmare, and seemingly illegal tie up of my money. Customer service reps are very good at double talk, and turning their errors around to be yours ( the customer). Whether you pay in the store or mail it in, dealing with CITIBANK is a pain in the backside. The television was returned . It has been three years that I have been fighting for my refund. I responded to a letter and they just put it back in the “to be investigated“ pile.. Promising to be back with me within 60 to 90 days. They want proof of return for the television that they came and picked up from my home. Until they get that proof they want to return my refund. How’s that for Customer Service? Way too many hours invested. Valuable time missed with my children that I can’t get back, and now I am in such a financial struggle which was a domino effect caused by Citibank. I will never recommend CITI Group for any business related transactions. My business had a CITI Business MasterCard/AAdvantage Platinum MasterCard and even that the card was active and paid off CITI was constantly declining transactions for any amount over $1,000 and putting a THEFT ALLERT on the account. Transactions were conducted personally at recognized retailers. After calling more than 5 times to the customer services department and get threated as a thieve CITI gave me very hard time to cancelled the credit card. Representatives constantly hanged up the phones when too many questions were asked. I called the corporate office and they left me on hold for more than 5 minutes to speak with a supervisor and the person never came to the phone. The bottom line is that CITI Group is not for business owners. I will regret every day applying for this credit card.
